Join us on September 9th for our Annual Wilderness Challenge/Triathlon! This course will run through the countryside, down the Cape Fear River and into downtown Erwin. All proceeds are used to support North Carolina military men & women in the United States Air Force stationed at Pope Army Airfield and active duty service members, Veterans, and First Responders in North Carolina through Operation Gratitude.
The competition begins with a 10 mile bicycle ride through the countryside to a Wildlife Landing on the Cape Fear River. Here you will begin the 8 mile Kayaking trip down the Cape Fear River to the Cape Fear River Park in Erwin. The competition will finish up the triathlon with a 3.2 mile run through Erwin to connect to the Dunn-Erwin Rail Trail & will end in downtown Erwin. A map of the course can be accessed below.
Race day begins with sign in at 7:00 am at The Erwin Business Complex, 200 North 13th Street, Erwin, NC where participants will sign in and pick up race numbers. Kayaks should be dropped off at NC Wildlife Boating Access Area, 640 Wildlife Road, Lillington, NC prior to the start of the race. Bikes and kayaks will be transported back to the finish line area where they can be retrieved after the race.
Kayaks for the event can be rented from Cape Fear Adventures in for $30. The company will deliver the kayak to the event
and also pick it up after the event. If you are interested you can contact them at (919) 299-0304 to reserve. You must contact
them early as there is a limited number of kayaks available.Fees:
Individual - $65 through June 30th ($75 as of July 1st)
Relay Team (3-person) - $120 through June 30th ($135 as of July 1st)All participants must complete the bike and kayak portion of the event within 2:30 of their start. Any participants who arrive at the second transition point after this time will not be listed in the race results.
Awards: Individual - First ($100), Second ($75) & Third ($50) place for women and men. Relay Team - First ($150) *All participants (if registered by July 15th) will receive a custom race medal.
